Surfing as one of the highly popular water fun and sports today can be as tough to master particularly when you don’t know how to handle your surfboard. There will be moments when you would feel so awkward when you are attempting to steer your surfboard and try to ride it on top of one wave after another. Trying out moves that may be as simple and essential as turning could be tough for one who is inexperienced and has no backgrounder on the proper way to turn or steer one’s surfboard. For this, here are some of the simple yet easy to follow tips particularly helpful for beginners.
Being comfortable with the basics of surfing comes on top of your “to do” list. You may find it difficult to move on to turning which may be a notch higher when even in the basics of surfing you are still but practicing. You can easily steer with your hands as long as you remember this: if you are a goofy foot, use your right hand to guide you as opposed to being a regular foot where you should be using your left hand to guide you. In surfing your hands actually become your steering wheel. You will soon find out that your surfboard goes to the direction where you point your hands by means of extending your arms and swinging them to the direction desired. This act forces your shoulders and hips to turn and lean into your rails which consequently shift your weight to the back foot keeping your balance at the same time.
It may take awhile to get comfortable doing this but once you find yourself already in this position you can now swing your arms going from one side to the other. Do this particularly when you are going from rail to rail. This happens when you are mostly carving up and down the wave but one thing to note is that when you are doing so, you should bend your knees in order for you to achieve a lower center of gravity especially when you find yourself leaning really hard.
The moment that you are gaining speed you should be able to take notice of how much you are leaning more and more during the turns you are attempting. You are then allowed to make bigger pivotal turns. To do this, you can start to use your back feet as a means to push hard into the turns that you make where you may not feel the fins of your surfboard engaging. It is here that you may even feel an extra bucket of water being sprayed.
Finally, it is a proven fact that further instruction and training can really get you going a long way making learning surfing easier. Remember that it would help if you are with the appropriate surfboard (meaning one that is suited to your ability) every time. Being able to distribute well your weight over the surfboard is a big plus point to steering or turning your surfboard as well.
