Catching waves is all about timing, positioning and paddling hard. It would be impossible to catch a wave if you do not put much effort into it. You need to keep your mind focused down on the wave, especially as you try to stand on your surf board while riding the wave. Once you lean your weight back you will lose the wave.
You need observe that every wave is different. Waves have different breaks and different types and will most likely have different tendencies. You need to learn every time you miss a wave and make corrections and then try again.
